Adam Cloch Dave Parker Receives ASAE & The Center’s Highest Individual Honor for Exceptional Leadership

I’m glad the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) will be recognizing Dave with the Key Award at their annual meeting in Los Angeles this August for his accomplishments as the leader of AGA and indeed his career. Too often, people do great work and never really get the recognition they deserve.

I’ve been at AGA for almost two years now and have nothing but good things to say about Dave. The thing about AGA is there are a lot of people that have been here a very long time. Always a good sign when you’re thinking about where you want to spend your day during a job search. When you talk to those people they talk about the way Dave handled the transition of AGA from a much larger organization based in Virginia to a much leaner organization based in DC.

One of the first stories they’ll tell you is how Dave configured the AGA space to be entirely open to improve communication. There are only five people with offices at AGA (they need them for HR/legal reasons). Dave isn’t one of them. He sits at a desk two spaces over. If I stand up right now, I can see his desk. It’s been great to be able to sit so close and hear some of the conversations he has. Very valuable. It’s not so great if I want to take a slightly longer lunch. Of course, since Dave tells me he reads every blog post, he knows I’m only joking and I never take a long lunch. Right, Dave?

Dave announced his retirement plans back in February. We’ll certainly miss him when he finally leaves but he’s made sure to put plans in place so AGA keeps moving ahead with purpose. I’ve pulled some quotes from that article so he can tell you about his time at AGA in his own words.

“It has been a wonderful 13 years. I am extremely proud of all that the AGA team has accomplished.  When I became president in 1997 I pledged that we would raise our voice, increase our visibility and provide outstanding value to the membership, and I believe we have succeeded in all three of those goals.  On Capitol Hill and at the agencies that regulate our industry, AGA is considered an honest broker, a reliable partner and a knowledgeable source of information on all issues of importance to the natural gas utility. The dedication and commitment of the entire AGA leadership to this association has been the real key to our success.  I have enjoyed working with every one of our members.”

On AGA staff.  “I have never worked with a finer group of professionals. Over the years, as we streamlined operations and reduced staff, AGA team members took on more responsibility, yet the quality of the work only increased.  Thanks to them, AGA will always be one of America’s most influential and effective trade associations.”

Congrats Dave. We’ve still got him for at least until the end of the year so I’m sure we’ll have some more posts like this one. Feel free to leave Dave a message below. You can certainly send him an email but if you leave the comment here, everyone can see it.

Adam Cloch Natural Gas Market Indicators

The prospect of a significantly warmer than normal summer given a strong La Nina developing in the Pacific Ocean, which may trigger a surge of natural gas to power generators, and a continued view of an active hurricane season for the Atlantic basin seem to be the key near-term influences that gas market analysts recognize today. Throw in the critical issues surrounding the gulf oil spill and you have a recipe for uncertainty for the cooling season that is upon us.

Those market elements and near-term uncertainty are not new. What is new is that market prices and the future view of natural gas acquisition prices (out 18 months or so) reflect stability. The strength of the current supply picture answers the question of how that is possible.

Adam Cloch Vision 2020: A Focus on Our Future

The cover story for the July issue of American Gas discusses the ongoing progress of AGA’s Vision 2020 Strategic Planning Initiative, which was created in 2008 in order to envision and plan for our future in the year 2020 and beyond.  Through a series of meetings, workshops and conference calls a number of task forces, committees and working groups comprising AGA staff, members and outside experts have examined many possible energy scenarios, utility business models and regulatory constructs to determine how natural gas utilities are likely to operate in the future, especially in a carbon-constrained environment in which increased energy efficiency and significant reductions of greenhouse gas emissions are a paramount national goal.

Read about AGA’s Vision 2020 Strategic Planning Initiative in the July issue of American Gas.

The good news is that, given its domestic abundance, environmental superiority and greater efficiency, natural gas, especially when used directly in America’s homes and businesses, will be the preferred fuel for years to come—and that should remain the case regardless of whatever climate change legislation Congress eventually passes.  But as Vision 2020 has pointed out, there are plenty of challenges and there will be plenty of changes ahead.

For one, natural gas utilities need to re-think their traditional business model of delivering the commodity—natural gas—to homes and businesses for heating, water heating and cooking applications.  That is because new competitors are already re-thinking that business model, which is another significant change that already is taking place.  Today companies such as Google, Intel, Microsoft and Home Depot are developing a variety of cost-effective energy solutions, including energy efficiency and “green” products and services that reduce energy use and save customers money.  The utility needs do likewise, but that starts with a better understanding of what products and services the customers will want.  To that end, utilities also need to re-think their relationship with customers, evolving from service providers into partners, empowering their customers to manage their own energy use through a variety of energy efficient solutions.

This in turn means continuing to ensure that new generations of highly efficient and “energy smart” natural gas products and services are available to the customer, which requires an industry-wide effort to support technological research and development.

Vision 2020 also points out that utilities will need to re-think their relationship with their regulators.  In the new carbon-constrained world in which energy efficiency and conservation are the goals, our industry will need a new regulatory construct that rewards, not penalizes, utilities for partnering with their customers to reduce natural gas use.

All in all, as the article in American Gas makes clear, a brave new world is coming and AGA’s natural gas utility members need to be prepared for it, which is one reason AGA developed the Vision 2020 Strategic Planning Initiative.   The other reason was to bring our members together to share ideas, strategize, and not only get more involved with AGA, but with one another.  Facilitating that involvement is one of the things AGA always has been, and always will be, very good at.  In an industry facing fundamental change, it’s nice to know some things won’t change.

Adam Cloch Spectra Energy’s Rusty Manor acts quickly during house fire

Thanks to Jerry for this heads-up on Rusty Manor, one of Spectra Energy’s employees. Rusty was on his way home from work in Oran, Missouri when he noticed smoke coming from the garage of a home. Rusty grabbed the fire extinguisher in his truck and ran to the house. He helped everyone out of the house (a 13-year-old-girl, her eight-year-old brother, and even the family pooch) before going back and putting out the fire in the garage.

Great job Rusty.

You can see the video report below. You can also visit Spectra Energy’s YouTube channel to watch more videos like this one.

Just another story…well maybe a little more than a regular story…but still, another good example of the type of people that work at a natural gas utility. People that live in your neighborhood. Leave a comment below if you’ve got your own story to share.
