Jackie Bavaro Giving Back a Top Priority for America’s Natural Gas Utilities

America’s natural gas utilities are true partners of the communities they serve. In addition to delivering natural gas safely and reliably to 177 million Americans across the country, utilities also make it a priority to foster a culture of giving with the goal to build and sustain vibrant communities.

The cover story for the March issue of American Gas magazine, titled “It’s Personal,” features three AGA member companies—Atmos Energy, AGL Resources and Southwest Gas—and their mission to transform people’s lives through a shared value of generosity.

Rooted firmly in the belief that education enriches the quality of life in any community, Atmos Energy has invested a significant amount of time, money and exphotopertise into literacy programs that are educating and empowering residents to reach their full potential. In 2013, Atmos Energy partnered with Texas A&M University-Commerce to operate the Atmos Energy Literacy Center at the Dallas West Branch Library and as a result, 1,000 adult learners and their children have enrolled in the program.

Since 2011, AGL Resources has hosted Volunteer Week, an annual event celebrating a commitment to environmental stewardship, energy assistance, community enrichment and education. Last year, employees promoted several charitable initiatives and performed 20 service projects in 15 northern Illinois communities, benefiting organizations from Habitat for Humanity to the Salvation Army Food Pantry.

In a similar vein, Southwest Gas and its employees have contributed thousands of hours annually in ongoing philanthropic efforts. This year, employees are donating resources to the American Legion Post 149 Rock the Troops Poker Run, a motorcycle-centered fundraiser, the proceeds of which go toward scholarships of deceased veterans’ children. In addition, Fuel for Life, the annual employee giving campaign, drew more than $1.4 million in pledges to local charities in 2015 alone.

These exceptional efforts by America’s natural gas utilities to better serve their communities are inspiring. Whether it’s sponsoring adult literacy programs or supporting military veterans—investing back into the community is a top priority and an example of true leadership in this industry. Let us know in the comments below or by using the hashtag #FuelingOurCommunities what you and your company are doing to give back.

We look forward to watching our members continue to make a real difference in 2016.
