Aaron Johnson AGA Presents at American Association of Blacks in Energy Conference

I would like to thank American Electric Power (Columbus, Ohio Chapter) for hosting the American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE)’s  33rd annual conference in Columbus, Ohio at the Hilton Easton Hotel. This year’s theme was ”People, Profit, Planet:  An Inclusive Approach to a Bright, Reliable Energy Future.” The conference examined how the industry must balance the needs of consumers and the environment in the emerging green economy and attracted approximately 300 professionals in the energy industry.

AABE’s conferences not only promote professional development and the sharing of industry information, but also provide great networking opportunities. I was pleased that AGA took advantage of the opportunity offered by AABE to spread our message that natural gas is a clean, abundant and reliable energy source that can and should play a key role in our carbon-restrained future. This year was particularly significant for me because three outstanding speakers from AGA presented to AABE members.

Chris McGill, Managing Director, Policy Analysis presented at the “Current Energy Markets Trends” session. This workshop focused on a general overview of how these markets work and the impacts of the markets on customers.

Richard (Rich) Kolodziej, President, Natural Gas Vehicles of America, focused on the “Outlook for Oil, Natural Gas and Alternative Fuels.” Rich’s discussion covered how the energy initiatives under consideration could potentially impact all fossil fuels – asking how will oil, natural gas and alternative fuels fit into tomorrow’s energy portfolio?

Andrew Lu, Director of Operations Safety, Operations & Engineering held an informative discussion at the Operation Compliance session. This session provided an overall understanding of the compliance requirements and the challenges associated with these requirements.

Let me know if you had the opportunity to attend the conference. I look forward to your feedback. For more information on future events please visit AABE.

Aaron Johnson AGA Goes to Bat for Natural Gas Users

The folks over at Wonk Room put together a pretty contentious piece attacking U.S. business leaders. We thought we’d respond by telling them a little bit about who we are and why America needs natural gas. See our response here

Aaron Johnson First CNG- Powered Ambulance

One of the sites I follow regularly, NGV Global, recently did a post on the USA’s First CNG- Powered Ambulance. It’s really great to hear how the city of Palm Desert, CA worked to convert one of their existing ambulances to a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Engine. They modified a 2009 Ford E450 6.8L gasoline chassis, to a dedicated CNG Engine and three cylinders carrying approx 30 gge (Gasoline Gallon Equivalents), or 26 gallons equivalent of CNG. The price tag for this particular project came in at $186,000.

The Palm Desert city council suggested the possibility using an ambulance powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) and they put their money where their mouth is. Read more info about the partners involved in the project.  It appears their city council is aware of the abundant amount of natural gas available domestically.

Now there is at least one ambulance on the street that is environmentally friendly in its travels to serve their community.

Aaron Johnson Networking through associations

I’m a big believer in associations. Not only do I work for an association but I’m also a member in different associations. One of these memberships is the American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE). AABE is dedicated to ensure the input of African-Americans and other minorities into the discussions and developments of energy policies regulations, research and development technologies, and environmental issues.

An Association like AABE allows me to grow both as an individual and as a professional. They offer many benefits that keep me engaged in relevant news to our industry, provide leadership opportunities, and allow me to network with the best and brightest in the energy industry. The networking opportunities are one of the reasons why I choose to be a member.

Officers Roundtable Discussion moderated by Marsha Sampson Johnson, Sr. Vice President Human Resources & Chief Diversity Officer, Southern Company.  The panel consisted of Jeff Lyash, Chief Executive Officer and President, Progress Energy; Carl English, Chief Operating Officer, American Electric Power; Doug Foshee, Chief Executive Officer and President, El Paso Corporation; Joe Laymon, Vice President, Human Resources, Chevron CorporationNisource; and Robert Skaggs, Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer

Last month, I went to AABE’s 32nd annual conference “Sustainable Energy for a New Economy” that was held at the Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel in Orlando, Florida. The conference was attended by approximately 350 professionals from energy companies. The event featured energy and environmental discussions, a clean vehicle showcase, an entrepreneurs’ forum, and a job fair. There were also  scholarship and young adult programs. Session topics included: The Obama Economic Stimulus Plan, job creation, climate change and energy conservation.

I was very pleased by the involvement of the utility company executives that attended the conference. One guest panelist included the AGA’s First Vice Chair Bob Skaggs of NiSource, Doug Foshee CEO and President of El Paso Corporation, and David Ratcliffe Chairman, EEI President and CEO of the Southern Company.  Their open dialogue regarding the issues their companies face in today’s challenging economy was very impressive. They expressed their perspectives on issues like diversity within their companies and steps they have taken or plan to take to improve in that area.

Conferences like this allow companies to address and look into more strategic ways to improve their organization when recruiting talent. The conference was a great opportunity to connect with other energy professionals from different aspects of the industry. Organizations allow their employees to attend because of the value it brings to their employees and shows the organization’s supportive role in their career development.

Right after a panel session discussion has finished Robert Skaggs, Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer, Nisource & Jimmy Staton, Executive Vice President & Group CEO, Nisource stop to take a photo with AABE members that participated in the session.

Are you using your association to help find these types of networking opportunities? How do you network?
