Dan Gibson National 811 day

Today is National 811 day. Get it. August 11. 8 11. Nice, right? You’ve probably read our stuff on 811. We’ve been a big supporter of 811 here in the past.

But in case you haven’t.

811 is what you can dial on your phone to notify utilities that you will be digging on your property. The utility companies will then come to your property and mark the approximate locations of all utility-owned lines with paint or flags. It usually only takes them a few days to come out. And, best of all the 811 service is free and worth the time to prevent an accident.

Since the creation of 811, there has been roughly a 40 percent reduction in safety incidents. However, it’s still an issue. An underground utility line is damaged during digging projects every three minutes in the United States.

You can get a lot more information from the “Did you know” section on call811.com. They even have a special section for special section for children.

So join us in celebrating National 811 day. Enjoy the video below and make sure you call before you dig.

Lydia Meigs Major Gas and Oil Groups Launch Study to Improve Pipeline Safety

It is no secret that pipeline safety is the highest priority of both the American Gas Association (AGA) and our natural gas utility members.  In fact, this is a priority shared across the natural gas and oil industries throughout the country … and beyond.  On August 9, AGA announced its participation in a coalition of U.S. and Canadian gas and oil industry groups seekinpipeline safety Major Gas and Oil Groups Launch Study to Improve Pipeline Safety g to identify new ways to boost pipeline safety.

To this end, AGA, the American Petroleum Institute, the Association of Oil Pipe Lines, the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America, the Canadian Gas Association and the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association have initiated a comprehensive study to explore safety models and procedures currently utilized by other industry sectors in an effort to deliver natural gas and pipeline-transported liquids more safely and reliably. It is expected that the study will be completed early next year.

The study will look at the practices of the nuclear and chemical industries, as well as other sectors.  It may also look at whether other industries have a third-party organization or a body within a trade group that establishes and monitors best practices and standards with regard to safety.   The study’s ultimate goal is to determine if there are new safety practices that are adaptable to the pipeline industry.

Natural gas pipelines deliver natural gas to approximately 175 million consumers through a 2.4 million mile underground pipeline system that represents approximately one-fourth of the energy consumed in the United States. It is absolutely essential that the gas and oil industries work together to establish the optimal safety model to ensure the safety and reliability of their infrastructures.

Dan Gibson Making of the natural gas commercial

I got a lot of great feedback on one of my favorite videos from last week so I decided to post a follow-up on the efforts what went into making that video from LovoFilms.

You can watch the “making of” video below to see the time and energy that went into the shoot. I enjoy watching the director’s face light up as he talks about the creative concept for the film. In his words:

  • The story is simple, visualize the warmth of natural gas by wool.

There was a month of preparation just gearing up for the shoot. The shoot itself took 4 days and night to shoot, with a professional crew of more than 40 people. They used both live and stopmotion with 4 different cameras. It’s amazing the amount of detail that went into the video and I enjoy seeing all the positive energy in the “making of” segment below.

Dan Gibson One of my favorite natural gas videos

As the votes pour in for the finalists of our natural gas video award, I thought I’d post one of my favorite natural gas videos. The video was done by TBWA Brussels, directed by Olivier Babinet produced by Lovo Films. Great video. Just makes me want to roll over and go back to sleep. Let me know what you think and don’t forget to vote for the natural gas video award.
