Dan Gibson Safety spotlight: AGL Resources

AGL Resources (AGL) is a large natural gas (among other things) company and they’re only going to grow (see the news about the Nicor purchase). I thought it would be a good time to take a look at how AGL spreads the good safety word through their website. In short, they do a great job.

But let’s take a closer look.

Elements addressing the visitor

When you visit the AGL Resources site, you’ll notice they give you links to each individual local utility in your area. This shows that they’ve really given some thought to the user experience and providing valuable service. Most of their visitors are probably looking for that local utility to get the service they need. Let’s visit the first utility on the list and see what we find.

You’ll note from the highlighted areas on the image above that there are three separate areas on the homepage that reference safety. Each of these areas is displayed in a prominent visual locations. The areas include on the gives a general overview of safety, one geared towards pipeline safety and one that ties into a national message supported by our members of “call before you dig.”

Examining the natural gas safety section

Once you reach the actual safety section (see image below) you’ll find a great overview with many useful tips. The page itself is clean, easy-to-read and broken into subsections that cover:

In the future

AGL Resources does have a twitter account featured prominently on the footer of the site. If you visit the account, it hasn’t been very active yet. I wonder if there are any plans on using twitter for customer service. Many companies are doing this already but I haven’t seen very much of it in the utilities community yet. I have a feeling it’s just a matter of time.

We have quite a few members doing great jobs on the safety sections of their website. We’ll be profiling them in the coming weeks. Let me know in the comments below of any good ones you’d like to see.

Jennifer O'Shea Piedmont Natural Gas Recognized as an American Heart Association Start! Fit-Friendly Company

It will come as no surprise that obesity in the country is on the rise…Michelle Obama has made this issue her top priority and headlines across the country emphasize how large this problem has grown. With that in mind, we are proud to share the news that AGA member company, Piedmont Natural Gas, has been recognized for the second year in a row as a Platinum-Level Start! Fit-Friendly Company by the American Heart Association (AHA). The Platinum-Level award is the highest level of recognition in the AHA’s Start! program. Companies recognized at the Platinum-level offer employees such things as physical activity options in the workplace; increased healthy eating options at the worksite; promotion of a wellness culture in the workplace; and, measurable outcomes related to workplace wellness.

Piedmont’s wellness program is in its fourth year and continues to grow. It has been incredibly well received by employees, and in 2010, 84 percent of Piedmont’s employees participated in the company’s Biometric Health Screening and Health Risk Assessment programs. Employees participating in the health risk assessments or the biometric screenings have free access to a health coach for up to 12 months to assist them with their health goals. Piedmont’s wellness program offers employees an on-site wellness coordinator and reimbursement programs for utilization of fitness centers, weight management and tobacco cessation. Piedmont also issues a quarterly wellness newsletter and sponsors frequent opportunities for employees to learn more about a variety of health topics.

Piedmont’s chairman, president and CEO, Thomas E. Skains addressed the company’s commitment to wellness: “We are honored that the American Heart Association has again recognized Piedmont’s efforts to promote physical activity and overall employee wellness. We remain committed to providing wellness education and opportunities for our employees and their families, but it is their dedication that is responsible for the success of our programs and the many positive results for Piedmont Natural Gas.”

Congratulations, Piedmont…here’s to a healthy holiday season!

Pam Lacey Congratulations to the EPA on 40 years

In a recent speech, EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson commented that many folks don’t remember how polluted the country was 40 years ago when EPA was created, so they now wonder about EPA’s mission.   At the time, Cleveland’s Cuyahoga River often caught fire, and cities such as Pittsburgh and Los Angeles were regularly entombed in a haze of smog.

I was a child then, but I do remember family trips from Annapolis to Baltimore, when we could see the brown cloud resting over the city and smell its sulfuric rotten egg stench long before we arrived at its black soot-covered buildings.  In the days before add-on pollution controls, we sometimes hung wet laundry outside in the “fresh air” only to find it covered in soot from the local Naval Academy power plant and (ironically) laundry facility.

Times have changed.   Administrator Jackson is right that we have made huge improvements during the past 40 years.  I also agree that it is possible to make further environmental improvements and still grow our economy, but I don’t always agree that EPA’s proposals accomplish that goal.  I think there is a tendency for different offices to operate in “silos,” focusing on one narrow area and “pushing the limit” on controls of that one thing, even if it would cost billions of dollars and provide minimal benefits, and even if spending a fraction of that money on another issue under the jurisdiction of another silo at EPA would yield significant benefits.

I am an environmental pragmatist.   In my view, the public interest would be better served if the leadership at EPA looked at the big picture—above the silo level—and focused the agency’s and society’s resources on what makes the most sense, so that we get the biggest improvements for the buck—for health, the environment and economic well-being.

Dan Gibson Released today: Utility Customer Arrearage and Disconnect Survey

We just released a new survey today that examines how people are doing staying current on their utility bills. It’s a mixed bag. While the number of people unable to pay their utility bills on time decreased by more than two percent, the survey also shows almost 14 percent of utility customers are at least 30 days late in paying their bills. Some other highlights:

  • the number of customers in arrears fell slightly more than two percent
  • the total dollar amount of customer arrears fell more than six percent
  • the number of customers disconnected fell almost three percent
  • the total dollar amount of past due bills of disconnected customers fell almost nine percent

The chart below gives you a little more information. I know…I know…it’s a little image of a big chart. Click the image for a bigger version. You can also hop over to aga.org for the full read.
