Dan Gibson Meeting the Route 66 guys

The other day I finally got a chance to meet the Route 66 guys in person. Well, at  least one of them. Unfortunately Keith Barfield was back at his “day job” but I did get a chance to speak with Mark McConville. It was great to finally meet them after months of corresponding online and watching their progress.

NGVsNow was hosting them at the Capitol in celebration of their completion of the trip from Santa Monica to Chicago. Their trip covered took 10 days and covered 2,460 miles. After the trip was over, NGVsNow invited them to to continue their journey to the reflecting pool in front of the Capitol. The 1966 Pontiac GTO is a beautiful car to begin with, but the fact that it has been modified to run on compressed natural gas, and emits 80 percent less carbon monoxide than it’s gasoline-powered counterparts makes it look even better.

The first thing you’ll notice when you’re speaking with Mark, and what sends a little chill along your spine, is how much they believe in what they’re doing. One of the things Mark mentioned was the feeling he gets filling up his tank knowing that the compressed natural gas is an American fuel and that the money he’s spending to fill up isn’t going to support a country that might not be friendly to the United States.

Mark spoke about the timing of the trip and how he watched President Obama speak shortly before they left and heard his challenge to “unleash American innovation.” Mark said that they took that statement to heart and plastered it across the side of their trailer, with a little modification…”unleashED American Innovation.”

I wasn’t the only one taking notice though. Congressman Spencer Bachus (AL-6) stopped by to see the car and actually took it out for a short spin. Congressman Bachus had a great quote about the project.

“Mark McConville and Keith Barfield left a lasting impression all along Route 66 with their car and their message about alternative fuels.  It’s fascinating to see how an old ‘muscle car’ can be converted into a clean-burning, low emissions vehicle.  This shows that we can solve our energy challenges using American technology and ingenuity.  It brought great publicity to Alabama here at the Capitol and the only other thing we needed driving it around was an eight-track tape of Little GTO.” You can read the rest of Congressman Bachus’ release here.

A lasting impression indeed. Here are some pictures I took including the trailer that was signed by people that saw the car during the journey. Mark was also nice enough to take a moment and talk about some of the people he met on the journey. Enjoy and leave a “congratulations” to them in the comments.

Dan Gibson ‘Drive To Inspire’ Rides Through Tulsa

Keith Barfield sent me this video last week. It comes from a News6Tulsa report on Keith and Mark McConville’s drive from Los Angeles to Chicago in a car powered only by compressed natural gas. Keith said it’s one of his favorite videos yet. The guys finished up their trip and are in town this week meeting up with Rep. Bachus about their project. I’m trying to line up some of their time to stop by AGA so we can talk with them and get some pictures of that beautiful car (man, Bruce and Chris are going to be upset they missed that).

Look for that later in the week but in the meantime you can watch the News6Tulsa video below to wet your whistle. You can also read last month’s post about Keith and Mark on our blog or read about the whole trip at route66goatgas.com.

Dan Gibson Route66 guys start their trip in a natural gas powered 66 GTO

There’s always a ton of news around natural gas powered vehicles. They’re some of my favorite stories. Earlier this year we did a quick profile on Castlen Kennedy and her trip from Austin to Boston in a natural gas powered Tahoe. She actually finished her trip last week. You can read about it on her blog. She has some nice statistics and notes on her experience.

But even before we learned about Castlen, we had started speaking with the guys at route66goatgas.com after their modified natural gas powered GTO was profiled  in Wired last year. The story is about two friends, Mark McConville and Keith Barfield, that decided to modify their Red 66 Pontiac GTO to run on compressed natural gas. They want to show people the potential of natural gas as a transportation fuel. Here’s a video of them leaving Birmingham yesterday.

There’s more video and photos at the Route 66 Goat Gas (CNG GTO) Facebook fan page. You can see all the planning they’ve put into the project. If you want to keep up with their trip along Route 66, you can read more at their blog or follow them on twitter. And Keith, safe travels. Leave us a comment when you get a chance.

Jennifer O'Shea Presidential Memorandum on Fuel Efficiency Standards

On Friday, President Obama signed the Presidential Memorandum on Fuel Efficiency Standards, proposing the development of a national standard for medium- and heavy-duty trucks to improve fuel efficiency and reduce transportation emissions. During the president’s remarks in the Rose Garden of the White House, he praised the use of natural gas as a transportation fuel in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit our dependence on foreign oil:

“Through the directive I’m signing, we’re also going to work with public and private sectors to develop the advanced infrastructure that will be necessary for plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles.  And we’re going to continue to work to diversify our fuel mix, including biofuels, natural gas, and other cleaner sources of energy.  I believe that it’s possible, in the next 20 years, for vehicles to use half the fuel and produce half the pollution that they do today.  But that’s only going to happen if we are willing to do what’s necessary for the sake of our economy, our security, and our environment.”

I am happy to see President Obama encouraging the use of natural gas—we agree that this is one of the solutions to solving the energy crisis our nation faces. His comments about the use of natural gas as a transportation fuel are also quite timely as our friend Castlen Kennedy began her journey from Austin to Boston in a CNG-fueled car last week. Rumor has it she will be in Washington, DC on Tuesday, so if you’re in the SW part of the city make sure you stop by to say hello!
